How To Remove Pet Odors From Your Sub-Floor

Yuck!  What is that smell!   That is the last thing you want to hear when you are buying or selling a home.  Pet odors are very tricky and can be extremely  hard to get rid of, if not impossible.   If you have a pet, or you are considering buying a home that had pets, here are some things to consider before you install your new flooring right over the problem.

1.  Sometimes you cannot detect a pet odor until water hits the surface – such as a carpet clean.  Just because the carpet looks clean from the top doesn’t mean that it is.  You have to pull the carpet back and inspect the underside to see if there are stains.  Nine times out of ten, even if you don’t smell anything, if there is pet damage, the smell will come back.

2.  Don’t replace the carpet without replacing the padding also.  You will regret it if you do.

3.  If there were pets in the house, you should always consider treating the sub-floor before replacing the flooring.  If the damage is not severe, there are several cleaners that contain enzymes that actually break down the urine and neutralize the odors.  Try products such as:  Zero Odor, Nature’s Miracle, Odorban, Nilodor or Cat-Off.  There are some homemade treatments you can try; however, your flooring is an awfully expensive item to risk not properly correcting the problem before your flooring is installed.

4.  A flooring company can also offer to “seal the floor”.  Commercial floor sealers can be very effective in correcting pet odors.

5.  If you have a severe pet odor problem, you will have no other choice but to replace the sub-floor -especially if your sub-floor is made of wood.  It is impossible to remove pet damage to a wooden sub-floor that has been saturated with pet urine.  So do yourself a favor, no matter what the cost, and replace the sub-floor.  In the long run the cost is well worth the return!
